Below are some frequently asked questions and answers for SoccerMetrix.
Short hand for "Success Rate". It measures the percentage of ball possessions that ended with something beneficial to their team.
Basic Idea: An event is a "success" if the player did something with the ball that was beneficial to the team. It is a "fail" if the player did something that did not help the team. Events should only be recorded once per player ball possession.
Example "Success" Events
Example "Fail" Events
Do NOT record an event if there is no clear possession. Like the ball bouncing around in a group of players.
Do NOT record an event if you are unsure who had success or failure. Sometimes the blame is shared partially between players. For example, a pass is a little off the mark, but the receiving player had a poor trap.
Common Scenario: Dribbling: Player 1 dribbles past an opponent with the ball, then passes the ball out of bounds. Record this as a "fail". The overall possession was a "fail" because the ball was lost, even though one player was beaten.
Common Scenario: Good pass: Player 1 makes a good pass, but Player 2 misses an easy trap. Record a "success" for the Player 1 (passer) and "fail" for the Player 2 (receiver).
Common Scenario: Bad pass: Player 1 makes a bad pass to Player 2. Record "fail" event for the Player 1 (passer) and no event for the Player 2 (receiver).
Common Scenario: Offside: Player 1 makes a good pass to Player 2. Player 2 receives the ball but is called offside. Record "success" event for Player 1 (passer) and "fail" event for Player 2 (receiver).
Shots: Shots are "successes" if they score a goal or they are a good attempt to score given the situatation. "Fail" shots are ones that didn't challege the keeper, missed the goal completely, or not a very good shot. Sometimes a shot that barely misses the goal is a success if it was a solid shot. Some shots that keeper saves are a failed shot because the shot was taken 2 yards from the goal and should have scored.
